10/7-10/11 Week in Review
Hello Friends,
Word of the week: Perception
This week, Place Corps had the amazing opportunity to partner with the O+ Festival, where we proudly presented Purple Rain—the boat our 2023-2024 cohort built in collaboration with the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Walking in the parade and showcasing this beautiful creation filled us with pride, while also prompting reflection on the power of perception.
The week was packed with preparations for the parade, as the fellows channeled the spirit of Prince to design our float. Their hard work paid off as they brought our vision to life—complete with rainbows, clouds, and shimmering silver rain.
Purple Rain itself is a testament to the shift in perception. Initially, the boat was going to be named The Purple People Eater, but on graduation day, a serendipitous storm altered our view of its meaning. What began as a light sprinkle turned into a torrential downpour during the launch at Kingston Point Beach, perfectly mirroring the purple boat. That moment changed how we saw the boat—it was no longer just a project, but a symbol of resilience and transformation. By the time we returned to the Hudson River Maritime Museum for a celebratory barbecue, the rain had passed, leaving us with an unforgettable memory and a name that felt just right: Purple Rain.
We’re excited to see how this year’s fellows will perceive their next project and can’t wait to discover the colors and name they choose!
