10/1-10/4 Week in Review
Hello Friends,
Word of the week: Art
This week, we immersed ourselves in the theme of Art in all its forms.
We kicked off with a tour of Bard College, where the fellows got to experience its beautiful campus, learn about small class sizes, and explore a wide variety of student clubs. They also discovered the opportunities available through the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), offering invaluable support for students from underrepresented communities.
Next, we enjoyed a private tour of the Hessel Museum, courtesy of Casey Robertson, Public Engagement Manager, while it’s temporarily closed for construction. The fellows were deeply moved by Carrie Mae Weems’ poignant reflections on the Black Lives Matter movement and Ho Tzu Nyen’s immersive audio-visual narratives. Both artists sparked conversations that will shape the fellows’ own Place Story presentations in the coming weeks.
For Personal Praxis, we headed to the YMCA for a workout and basketball session, a reminder that art exists in movement and sport, too. Later, Aurora led a screen printing workshop where the fellows collaborated on designs and created custom Place Corps totes—perfect for our upcoming tabling at the O+ Festival. It was a wonderful hands-on way to connect with the artistic process.
October greeted us with another day sailing on the Hudson River. As we sailed, we enjoyed lunch on the water, soaking in the peaceful beauty of nature, which felt like an artistic experience in itself.
To wrap up the week, we returned to Kingston Ceramics for another workshop, this time focusing on glazing techniques. The fellows explored color choices and learned how the glazing process transforms the final pieces. This hands-on experience brought our journey with art full circle, from admiring masterpieces to creating our own.
Art is woven into the fabric of everyday life. We hope you find a little time this week to explore your own creativity.
Have a good weekend,
Place Corps Team
