10/21-10/25 Week in Review

Hello Friends,

Word of the week: Envision

This week, we explored the word "envision" from micro to macro, beginning with discussions about what we envision for a better world. Responses ranged from unlimited resources to housing for all, the power to choose, and more kindness. We also reflected on where we see ourselves in ten years, as well as envisioning the conclusion of our programming and even our daily routines.

With Lissy, we dove into the concept of mise en place—a French culinary term that refers to the preparation and organization of ingredients before cooking. In order to envision a meal, we first gather and arrange everything we need. The fellows practiced this by making Caesar dressing from scratch, one of our fellowship favorites, using just a few ingredients: Worcestershire sauce, lemon, mustard, and more.

With Arts with Aurora, we envisioned our block prints. Since we had to write the words backwards, it really challenged us to envision our designs in reverse. Some fellows preferred working with finer lines, while others wished the project could have been done on a larger scale. Some explored using negative space, while others experimented with different techniques. It was a creative and thoughtful way to envision our prints.

At the Hudson River Maritime Museum, the fellows began envisioning the cutting boards they’ll craft for our Winter Expo raffle. They chose colors and wood types, and imagined their final designs. The process involved measuring and fitting wood pieces together, while Max got our minds buzzing with subtraction trivia, challenging us to resist the temptation of calculators!

To wrap up the week, some fellows focused on college applications, taking advantage of SUNY’s free application week, while others pursued personal programming goals. This week was all about envisioning—daily, monthly, and yearly versions of our future selves, as we continue to grow and learn together.

We hope you have a week filled with envisions for the future!

Have a good weekend,
