9/23-9/27 Week in Review

Hello Friends,

Word of the week: Growth

This week at Place Corps, we embraced growth as the central theme of our programming. By showing up each day, the fellows are embodying their own personal growth. Like sunflowers turning toward the sun, we at Place Corps strive to grow through curiosity and intention, always seeking out the light of new opportunities and collective well-being. One fellow’s reflection after a morning of sailing on the Hudson River—"I’m doing things I would never do if it wasn’t for this program"—perfectly embodies Place Corps’ experiential, hands-on approach to learning, rooted in the progressive educational philosophies of John Dewey, David Orr, Rudolph Steiner, and others.

Our volunteer work at People’s Place was another powerful moment of growth. Splitting into teams to work in the café and sort donations, we experienced firsthand the importance of giving back. This opportunity to serve the community highlighted how growth often stems from supporting others, reminding us that personal development flourishes when we lift those around us.

We were also fortunate to visit Benjamin Wigfall’s studio in New Paltz, where we were inspired by his vast African art collection. Seeing his creative space and learning about his journey was a profound reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community. His growth as an artist and his contributions to Kingston left us all in awe.

At the Hudson River Maritime Museum, we switched groups with rowing and sailing, expanding our experiences. Though the weather was overcast, the river remained beautiful and calm. We’re taking advantage of these opportunities on the water, knowing that the growth we experience now is preparing us for the changing seasons ahead.

As you reflect on this week, take a moment to recognize your own growth. It may come in small, steady steps, but each one moves you forward.

Have a good weekend,

Place Corps Team
