Halloween Approaches....
Hello Friends: Week in review 10/23-27
The word of the week was: Connection
This week we explored the theme of βconnectionβ as our fellows actively engaged with the community, forging meaningful relationships, and gaining insights into the intricate web of human activities, past and present. We believe that learning is most effective when it encourages fellows to see the relationships between different subjects and real-life experiences.
One of the highlights of the past week was our visit to the Hudson River Maritime Museum, where we had the opportunity to meet with Carla, the dedicated archivist of this historic institution. Carla shared with us her inspiring journey into the world of archiving and how her passion for the past became a lifelong connection.
Carla expressed that her role as an archivist is not just a job: it's a profound connection to the history and heritage of the Hudson River. She believes that preserving and sharing these stories is her way of forging a link between the past and the present. It's through the artifacts, documents, and stories that she curates that Carla fosters a sense of connection among visitors, helping them to better understand and appreciate the region's rich maritime history. Her dedication to maintaining these connections with the past reminds us of the importance of our work in Place Corps. Our mission, like Carla's, is to unearth and safeguard the stories and cultural heritage that define our communities.
Another highlight was volunteering at People's Place, a local community organization. Here, the fellows connected with community members who rely on essential services, highlighting the importance of supporting and strengthening the bonds within our community. The act of volunteering exemplifies the power of connection, where individuals come together to create positive change in the lives of others.
"Connection" is not just a word for us; it's a guiding principle that shapes our approach to education and community engagement. By fostering a deeper understanding of the connections that define our world, we aim to empower our fellows and community members to be active, responsible, and caring participants in the world around them.
Have a great weekend,
Place Corps Team
