Into the Swing of Things πŸ’«

To begin the week we went to Sky High Farm, a regenerative farm and Place Corps partner, who is teaching us about sustainable farming practices and ways that we can grow food in our own backyards and neighborhoods to increase access to healthy and nutritious food. While there we checked out the vegetable garden and the livestock pastures (and met some fluffy cows), and collected flowers and vegetables to take home with us. Sky High was also shooting a documentary in partnership with converse about using fashion and commerce as a way to fund their efforts to address the problem of food sovereignty in the Hudson Valley. It was a beautiful day.

The morning started with woodworking at HRMM, hammering nails and using a drill, while measuring and cutting wood and becoming more familiar with the tools. In partners we created wooden frames with the wood we prepared and created our first pieces of woodwork! In the afternoon we took Solaris, the solar powered boat, and went to the Kingston Lighthouse and learned about the lighthouse keeper Mary Murdoch who took over maintenance of the lighthouse after her husband’s death.

We worked with Karine in the morning and talked about the design aspect of how we want the box to look and what products we feel are essential to be in the box. We discussed the press release and how to communicate the project to a wide audience. In the afternoon at CPW, we looked through the night photos fellows took in the previous week and discussed. Later we went into the basement and worked with lighting to create scary pictures in low light conditions. This was a fun time for fellows to stage, pose and direct shots: we move into the elevator where we used light effects and slow shutter speed to create drama! Can’t wait to see the prints next week, they will make great halloween cards.
