Some Words On: Fellowship Grants
Too often, young people enter adulthood unprepared to manage their own finances. This lack of preparation can mean the difference between a young person thriving versus struggling to survive due to limited financial means.
The inequities that plague our country’s dominant systems show up in financial education and readiness: many young people finish high school without adequate money management skills or tools. This furthers the difference in opportunity between those with privilege and those without, between those who have financial literacy and support, and those who do not.
Often, historically marginalized communities have less access to financial means and tools to start businesses, get loans, and to simply pay living expenses, due to systemic racism.
At Place Corps, we not only acknowledge these realities, but we also address them in an applied learning curriculum in which we teach fellows financial literacy using their Fellowship Grants of up to $3,00 per trimester in grant awards, and help them to engage in financial planning for their future. Fellows are eligible for a total of up to $9,000 in Fellowship Grants to aid the education and professional develop, both during and after the fellowship, in addition to providing a financial base to aid them in building a positive future.
